Elbow Pain and Injury in Young Athletes
نویسنده
چکیده
Elbow pain and injury in young athletes include both acute traumatic and chronic overuse injuries. The anatomy of the developing pediatric elbow and the rapid growth of youth sports have led to an increase in chronic repetitive stress elbow injuries in the pediatric population. These injuries occur mostly in overhead athletes, throwers, and gymnasts. Force dissipation during throwing or axial loading results in lateral compression elbow injuries such as Panner’s disease and osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum or radial head. Medial distraction forces are responsible for medial injuries such as UCL failure, medial epicondyle apophysitis, and avulsion. Valgus extension overload causes posteromedial elbow impingement, olecranon apophysitis, and olecranon stress fractures. Conservative treatment modalities such as activity modification and physical therapy are successful in most cases, but early recognition is important as delays in diagnosis may prolong symptoms and necessitate operative intervention.

Mri of the Athlete with Elbow Pain
INTRODUCTION MRI is commonly used to evaluate athletes with elbow pain. MRI can acquire high resolution images with excellent tissue contrast in multiple planes. It is therefore well-suited for assessing the bones, ligaments, tendons and nerves of the elbow which may all be sources of pain in athletes. MRI is particularly helpful for evaluating athletes with non-localisable elbow pain and athle...
متن کاملDevelopment and Validation of the Elbow Demand Rating Scale
BACKGROUND Overhead sports place the greatest strain on the elbow of any of the upper extremity joints. Unfortunately, athlete-specific functional outcome tools do not exist for the elbow. HYPOTHESES THE ELBOW DEMAND RATING SCALE (EDS) WILL DEMONSTRATE STRONG RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY PROPERTIES: (1) test-retest reliability with a 2-week EDS administration, (2) internal reliability of the subs...
متن کاملElbow injuries in the youth athlete.
Elbow injuries are common in sports that involve throwing, overhead activity, and upper extremity weight-bearing, including baseball, volleyball, football, javelin throwing, and gymnastics. Although acute injuries of the elbow are somewhat common in pediatric patients, overuse injuries in youth athletes are very prevalent. Elbow pain in baseball players aged 9 to 12 years has been found to rang...
متن کاملPrevention of Overuse Injuries in Young Baseball Pitchers
With millions of athletes participating in baseball in the United States annually, overuse injuries are common occurrences. Epidemiological studies, including surveys of orthopaedic surgeons, coaches, and athletes, indicate that injuries such as those to the ulnar collateral ligament are increasing in incidence. Many risk factors for throwing injuries have been proposed-including the immature s...
